Oasis Gun - 7'3" - Polyurethane Foam - Glass on Tri Fin
This board is part of a quiver I shaped in Puerto Rico during the 1990s and early 2000s. I spent a lot of time there, working out of Oasis, a small factory where I would go in at dawn, shape four boards, surf the evening session, and try to fit in as many boards and as many waves as I could over the course of two weeks. This one is an 7'2" with a slightly smaller gauge, and it was part of a really nice Puerto Rico quiver.
We did not have proper gun blanks down there, so I had to glue up my own blanks with Angelo and Christian Corso using the materials we had. Sometimes the foam would not dry right, so I would glue them up, shape them, and then have to start over again if they popped apart. Even with all that, some beautiful boards came out of that period, and this is one of them.
I later took this board to Pascuales when I went down to judge a national contest for the Mexican Surf Federation. It was too big at first, so we surfed somewhere else and came back in the afternoon when Pascuales had cleaned up perfectly near the river mouth. No one was out, so I grabbed this board and paddled out. I missed the first wave I lined up for and knew I just needed one more stroke. On the next one, I got in, stood up, made the drop, and as I lifted my arm, my shoulder slammed into my head and nearly knocked me unconscious underwater. I ended up coming in front of thousands of people on the beach, all watching these massive waves unload on the bar. It was an unforgettable moment, and that is why this board holds such good memories for me. It is a special part of my Puerto Rico quiver.
