We used to call this one “Chocolate Fudge” or maybe “Marble Fudge.” I originally made it for a friend of mine, and after I went to Brazil, I lost track of both him and the board for a long time. Years later, someone called me and said there was a backyard sale in California with a board that looked like wood and had my logo on it. I asked how much it was, and when they told me $125, I said, “Buy it, I’ll be right down.”

I rode this board at K-38 and it got busted up in about two months. At the time, I was trying hard to copy the feeling of a David Nuuhiwa-inspired board shape that had a huge influence on my shaping, along with the boards I admired before I started working with Brewer. I had one magic board shaped for me in France by Diffenderfer that worked in everything from 2-foot surf to 20-foot surf, and I absolutely loved it. I kept chasing that feeling in my own designs, and this board came out especially good. In fact, I think it may be the best version of that Diffenderfer-inspired shape I ever made.

One day at K-38, I had a rough session. Back then it was a heavy scene, and mostly locals controlled the lineup. I was getting waves, but one local kid kept dropping in on me. Eventually he took off in front of me, ran into my legs, fell, and started yelling at me. Since I spoke Spanish, I yelled right back. He jumped off his board and took a swing at me, which was a bad move. He swung up, I swung down, and I caught him pretty good. But that was just the start. When I got back to the beach, there were six or eight guys waiting with two-by-fours, and it looked like it could have gone very badly. Luckily, I knew one of them, and he stepped in and told them to leave me alone.

I was bartending at the time, and I had brought one of the cocktail waitresses with me on that Mexico trip. After all that, my friend Nikki said, “Let’s get out of here,” so we headed down to Puerto Nuevo. Back then it was just lobster fishermen and little home kitchens, no signs, no tourist setup, nothing like it is now. We ended up in one of the fishermen’s homes and had a huge lobster meal for about three bucks. I was pretty beat up and bruised, but it still turned into a memorable day. Just having this board back brings all of that rushing back. With no resin available at J-Bay, he went to a hardware store that night, bought epoxy glue and fiberglass, patched it back together, and surfed it again the next day. Then he broke it again in another section at Impossibles. He brought the two pieces home, put it back together, and later rode it at Todos on a smaller day, where it broke once more. He repaired it again, and here it is: Recycler Number One, the very first of its kind.

Design: Pintail Shortboard
Size: 6'2"
Construction Material: Recycler
Fin Configuration: Glass-On Tri Fin
Surfboard: 26-2-11

This is a 7'6" Sunset Beach gun I made for Grant Stapelberg.
